The Art of the Linocut

Silverpoint is an ancient drawing technique first used by medieval scribes and later perfected by Renaissance masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. It involves drawing with a silver wire or rod on a specially prepared surface, leaving a faint, indelible line that tarnishes over time, gaining a beautiful, warm tone. The process is unforgiving, as the lines cannot be erased, demanding precision and confidence from the artist. I love the delicate nature of the lines and the way the metal oxidizes, giving each piece a unique, living quality.

Linocut, a modern form of relief printmaking, emerged in the early 20th century. It involves carving an image into a sheet of linoleum, which is then inked and pressed onto paper. Unlike woodcut, linoleum's lack of grain allows for smooth, fluid lines and shapes, making it a favorite of artists like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. I'm drawn to the linocut's bold simplicity and the tactile process of hand-carving each piece. It's a way to create powerful, graphic images with a hands-on, traditional feel.

Woodcut is one of the oldest forms of printmaking, originating in China around the 9th century. The technique involves carving a design into a block of wood, leaving the areas to be printed in relief. The unique grain of the wood often shows through in the final print, adding a natural texture and character that is impossible to replicate with other mediums. I find a deep connection to history when I work with wood, and the process of hand-carving and pressing each print feels like a conversation with the past. It's a powerful and raw medium that produces truly unique results.
